Guitar Videos - Link Updates

Just a quick note to update users on the links to the guitar videos on the main site. Some of the early site links used Google video which is winding down so I've migrated the guitar video links over to my youtube account. If you have any trouble with the links please let me know and I can try to steer you in the right direction. An update on the site lessons - after replacing my computer I've discovered that my webcam is incompatible with Windows 7 so there will be a delay in updating the main Guitar Lessons and Lick of the Day until I get another camera. Sometimes as a guitar player I find myself guilty of not thinking about music as a whole and focus too much on the particular instrument that I happen to play. When I do this I find it helpful to dedicate some time studying composition or listening to music that is diverse and uses a wide range of other instruments. Frank Zappa's music provides a rich source of learning material in addition to being great music. You also get the added bonus of some amazing guitar playing as well. In that spirit I am sharing a Frank Zappa Masterlcass by Dave Frank. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Agile Guitar Demo #2

This is a second part to my video demoing of my new Agile 3000 guitar. This is just a few licks and riffs off the top of my head but I think it illustrates how the guitar sounds with some faster runs than the last video. I played straight into the computer through a Line6 Floor Pod Plus. This is pretty much noodling around so take it for what it is but I think it will give you some idea of the sound and maybe you'll hear a couple guitar runs you think are cool.

New Guitar - Agile 3000

I picked up a new ( well used but new to me) Agile 3000 guitar today and wanted to see how it compared to my Epiphone LP 100. Just a few quick licks and riffs for each guitar in the following video. To be fair the Agile is a slightly more expensive guitar but since I got mine used they were comparable in price. The LP100 in my local market in Canada now retails around $350. I really love both instruments and think they play really well and provide a great bang for the buck.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day. It is hard to believe that we are over half way through March. As many of you know April is International Guitar Month. My goal is to post at least 4 new public video guitar lessons on the site. Guitar Practice Tips

This is an example of practicing guitar scales/improv over a standard chord progression. This is based around the progression for Autumn Leaves. What I've done is left some space to practice scale runs and some improv lines within the rhythm. This help hone your rhythmic timing and also your improvising skills. I'm still learning jazz guitar but you can apply this to any musical genre you are practicing like blues and rock. If you interested in trying out this progression the chords are: Cmin7/F7/BbMaj7/EbMaj7/A7b5/D7/G6/G7

New Guitar Lesson Posted

A new guitar lesson was posted in Minor Pentatonic 101 looking at a beginner level guitar solo using the E Minor Pentatonic scale. Internal site content links are still producing a 404 error so you may have to hit the back button on your browser and try the site content link again to get it to properly work. Hopefully this issue will shortly be resolved. Any technically minded guitar players who think they know what is causing this issue - I'm open to suggestions.

Guitar Lesson Frank Zappa style guitar solo

An intermediate version of a guitar solo in the style of Frank Zappa was posted on the website in the styles and genres section under Classics 101. Frank Zappa was a master musician, composer and guitar player and I would recommend studying his music for all musicians. The guitar solo example posted on the site is my original attempt to demonstrate some rhythmic phrasing and note choices that are inspired by Frank Zappa. I would strongly recommend guitarists check out the astounding guitar solos on "Shut up and Play Yer Guitar". It is chalked full of jaw dropping playing.

Guitar Lesson - Picking Etude

New guitar lesson posted in the warm up and techniques section. This is a classically inspired etude that focuses on picking technique. I was practicing an etude by Bach and thought I'd try to come up with my own original composition and this was the result. It's based on the A Minor scale although there are several non scale notes in several places. If you have any trouble understanding the tab or video just let me know and I will answer any questions you may have. I generally alternate picked this piece but feel free to experiment with economy picking and mini sweeps where you find it works for you. Cheers.

A new guitar lesson was posted today looking at guitar scale sequences with a metal guitar riff example. The example has both regular and slow video and tab. The scale sequence is in A Minor but the guitar is tuned down one and a half steps. I had fund recording this. Let me know if you have any questions or comments about this or any other lesson. The techniques used in this lesson will help your alternate picking, timing, rhythm and palm muting. The difficulty level is beginner/intermediate. The lesson is located in the Metal Licks and Riffs course in the Genres Section under the title "scale sequences".

two new guitar lessons posted online

Just a quick site update. Two new guitar lessons were posted today. The first is a look at a Drop D Metal Riff. You can find it in the Styles and Genres section in the Metal Riffs and Licks Course. Crank up the distortion and check it out.

When you recover from the metal riff there is a fingerstyle guitar arrangement of an old hymn called "the Old One Hundredth". This really works best with a classical or at least acoustic guitar but I've stuck with electric int he example. This arrangement is by Jim Nailon and is used with his permission. This lesson is found in the Songs section and includes tab and the video has a breakdown of a slow version and right hand view. Jazz Guitar Diversion

A new guitar lesson on speed picking was posted today. Before you fire off too many emails I'm not Paul Gilbert or Yngwie Malmsteen so this is an intermediate speed pikcing lesson. It's based on an ascending run in G Major in sextuplets. Be sure to use a metronome and strict alternate picking beginning on a downstroke. As the name of the song suggests the rhythm guitar kinda bounces along with a shuffle beat. There are some chromatic licks through in on the turnaround which are fun to play too. Sundown Blues - 12 Bar Blues Guitar Lesson

A new 12 bar blues guitar lesson suitable for acoutic or electric will be posted later on today. It's an intermediate level blues in the key of E. I've included an intro normally associated with much older acoutic blues/jazz masters like Eddie Lang and Lonnie Johnson. The guitar in the video as always (unless noted) is tuned down a half step. The video takes you through the piece step by step and tab is provided to help further. The tab is only a rough guide so listen carefully to the example to learn the phrasing. When you get the piece down try incorporating some improv or include your own favorite blues licks into a second 12 bars. New Course Beginner Bluegrass Guitar

The first run we look at is from G to C and incorporates notes from the respective major scales of each chord and uses pull offs and hammer ons to add a little speed and flow to the piece.

Our first lesson of the new year is a brief look at an example of the use of octaves in classic rock in the style of Jimi Hendrix. The brief musical example demonstrates several octave fingerings and using unison bending and slides in conjunction with octaves. Jimi Hendrix frequently employed various licks and embellishments in over chords that he learned during his playing the R & B "chitlin" circuit before he moved to England and began recording with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He used this technique on many famous recordings including: "Little Wing", " The Wind Cries Mary" and "Angel". This lesson with free tab located in the classic 101 section of the main site Video Guitar Lessons looks at a lick that employs some embellishments and techniques in the style of Jimi Hendrix.

New Metal Guitar Lesson posted

A new Guitar lesson was posted in the metal riffs and licks section. Tab is available on the site. As always tuned donw a half step. This metal guitar lick is a descending run in E minor that works its way down the fretboard from the 12 fret at the high E string to the E at the 5th fret on the B string. The guitar lick is all 16th notes and should be played with alternate picking.

New guitar lesson posted - Tapping Etude

A new guitar lesson was posted on the site in the Chops and Techniques section. This lesson is on tapping and outlines a chord progression in C using arpeggios for the chords C/G/Am/F/Dm/Em/F/G. The first note of each three note is flicked with the index finger and the third note is the one that is actually tapped.

A new exercise was posted that looks at a three finger legato lick in G Minor across the 6th and 5th strings. This guitar exercise alternates between the pattern of index middle pinky and index ring pinky so its a great way to start working on finger independence. This free video guitar lesson and tab can be found in the Techniques and Chops section on the site.

A new legato exercise for guitar was posted in Warm up and Techniques section of the site. Only the very first note is picked - everything afterwards is played using the left hand only with hammer-ons or pull-offs. Makes a great warm up and I think it sounds pretty cool. You can find the tab and video on the site. The video example is played first with distortion then a clean sound at two slower speeds.

Chucky Berry Style Solo

A new lesson in the style of Chuck Berry was posted in the Classic Licks section of the site. This is a solo over a 12 bar blues progression in D. The lesson looks at some common techniques that Chuck Berry made famous including unision bends and repeating riffs. Chuck's playing inspired and continues to inspire countless guitar players so I recommend checking out his playing.

Two new guitar lessons with video and tab were posted today. The first is a repeating riff that makes a great alternate picking exercise. It uses the E Minor Pentatonic scales starting at the E on the 12th fret. You can find it in the warm up and techniques section of the site. The second is a fun triplet based riff in Drop D. This is located in the metal riffs and licks section.

A new Drop D Riff was posted in Metal Riffs and Licks section of the site. The video has a slow version as well as shots of the right hand picking. It's primarily played with downstokes. The faster single note sections use plam muting and incorporate pull off and hammer ons. I hope you enjoy this short guitar lesson. A new lesson posted was posted that looks at a brief Jeff Beck Style blues lick. It's an interesting guitar lick because it uses a bend that's between a quarter and a half step. These are called microtonal bends because they fall between notes in standard western musical notation. You can find a video and tab in the Blues102 section of the site. Just a quick note to let you know about the latest lesson. This one is kind of a toungue twister for guitar. It has two similar patterns that utilize repeated notes with the first pattern repeating the second note and the final pattern repeating the fourth note. A new picking lesson was posted here it alternates between 16th note sextuplets and eighth note quintuplets. It is great to help develop a more accurate and precise picking hand and begin to explore more complex rhythmic subdivisions. New Course posted

New course was started today looking the the major Pentatonic scale especially in blues and rock playing. The first lesson looks at the E Major Pentaonic scale and presents an example similar in style to Hendrix circa the Bold as Love era playing. The real fun starts when you begin to combine the major and minor pentatonic scale within the same piece of music. This will be the subject of future guitar lessons. Although I've been resting my wrist I've added several new lessons to the site. You'll just have to wait for the video examples but the tab and lesson description should give you enough to start practicing. Lessons added include a Zakk Wylde style chromatic run, a blues lesson using call and response soloing technique and a lesson on 16th note funk rhythms. Also a lesson on tapping in early Van Halen style and a look at a typical Randy Rhoads style legato phrase. Grab that guitar and check them out!

Just wondering if any site users have an opinion on the tab section being posted before the video. In an effort to speed recovery of my nagging wrist pain I've decided to regrettably postpone playing for at least a week. Unfortunately that means no new video posts and no practicing (aside from right hand picking technique and theory). I am able to compose exercises, riff, licks and lessons in tab and post them with the video to follow. I'd like your input on whether you would find this useful. Please take a minute to let me know. New David Gilmour Style Guitar Lesson posted

The second part of our look at the guitar style of David Gilmour was posted today. This example in Blues 101 looks at slow bends and vibrato frequently employed by Gilmour to add some feel and expressiveness to his songs. I wholeheartedly recommend checking out Gilmour's work with Pink Floyd his sense of timing, feel and command of the instrument are hard to overstate. In an era where guitar players seem determined to be judged by metronome speed Gilmour's playing reminds us that the guitar is a tool for expression and conveying feeling.

New Southern rock lesson posted. Find the tab in the southern rock section of the main site. This riff uses a technique where a note is bent and then held while other notes are played. This riff involves one main pattern that is repeated in two locations down the neck.

A new ZZ Top inspired riff was posted in the riff raff section. This lick derives its impact primarily from the rhythm as most of the riff stays on a static A Chord. Take note of the rests and make good use of right and left hand muting. Most of the chord strokes that follow the rest and agressive upstrokes that add a rawness and real feel to the sound. Try experimenting with various amounts of distortion to achieve the desired result.
